Rebuilding From
the Frame Forward
A remarkable residential rebuild that brought S. R. Freeman back to reconstruct a home after fire, carrying its work from structural framing through siding and interior trim.
Project
Overview
The Pine Flat Fire Rebuild carries a unique history within S. R. Freeman's North Bay portfolio. SRF originally completed the home's framing and siding and was approximately 90% through the interior trim when the residence was destroyed by fire, requiring the structure to ultimately be built again.
S. R. Freeman returned to reconstruct the residence, once again bringing together structural framing, exterior siding, and interior finish work. Beyond the home itself, the project became an important chapter in SRF's North Bay growth and contributed to the company's decision to establish a stronger presence in the Santa Rosa area.
Building the
Home Again
Few projects give a construction team the experience of building the same residence twice.
Because S. R. Freeman had already completed the structural framing and exterior work and progressed substantially through the interior trim, the team brought firsthand familiarity with the home into the rebuilding process.
Returning after the fire meant translating that experience into a new structure while helping move the property forward after an unexpected loss.
Continuing
Through Unusual Conditions
The rebuilding effort unfolded during an unusual period for the construction industry.
As work continued around the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, S. R. Freeman's crews operated under essential-worker provisions that allowed construction activity to proceed where permitted. The circumstances added another layer to a project already defined by rebuilding after a significant fire.
Through those changing conditions, the focus remained on progressing the residential reconstruction and carrying the project forward.
A Closer Look at the Build
Custom Residential Framing
S. R. Freeman provided structural framing for the residence during both the original construction and the subsequent rebuild.
Exterior Siding & Trim
The team's scope extended into the home's exterior, carrying its involvement beyond the primary structural framing.
Interior Finish Carpentry
Interior trim represented a substantial portion of SRF's original work, with the team nearing completion of that phase before the fire occurred.
Residential Fire Rebuild
Following the loss of the original structure, S. R. Freeman returned to help reconstruct a home the team already knew in considerable detail.
A Project That Helped Shape the North Bay
Pine Flat became significant not only because of the rebuilding effort, but also because of what the project revealed about S. R. Freeman's growing work in the region.
Before establishing a dedicated Santa Rosa presence, SRF was supporting North Bay projects from its San Francisco operations and arranging temporary accommodations for crews working in the area. Pine Flat helped demonstrate the level of opportunity and ongoing demand for the company's work in the North Bay.
That experience contributed to the development of S. R. Freeman's Santa Rosa regional presence.
Experience
Across the Structure
Pine Flat also demonstrates the breadth of S. R. Freeman's involvement within a custom residence.
The team's work extended from structural framing into exterior siding and detailed interior trim.
Working across these different stages gave SRF an understanding of the home that went well beyond the initial structural shell.
That continuity became particularly meaningful when the team was called upon to rebuild the residence.
Built With the Bigger Picture in Mind
S. R. Freeman approaches custom residential work as part of a larger construction process.
Our philosophy is to think like builders, not just framers. At Pine Flat, that perspective extended across framing, exterior siding, interior finish work, and ultimately the reconstruction of a residence the team had already helped bring close to completion.
The project stands as a distinctive example of adaptability, long-term craftsmanship, and the experience required to return to a challenging build and begin again.
