Built for a
Challenging Hillside
A custom North Lake residence shaped by complex framing, structural steel, difficult hillside access, and carefully planned crane operations.
Project
Overview
The North Lake Custom Residence combined complex structural framing and steel work with the logistical demands of a challenging hillside property. Difficult access influenced how materials and structural components could reach the home, making field planning an important part of the framing process.
To work within those limitations, S. R. Freeman used crane operations to bring selected materials and wall sections into position. The project required the team to coordinate the structural work around both the complexity of the residence and the physical constraints of the site.
Framing Where
Access Is Limited
Hillside construction can change how even fundamental framing operations need to be approached.
At North Lake, difficult access restricted conventional material movement and created additional considerations for field execution. S. R. Freeman adapted by identifying components that could be brought into the site by crane and coordinating their placement with the progression of the structure.
The approach allowed the team to work around the property's limitations rather than allowing those limitations to dictate the entire framing process.
A Closer Look at the Build
Complex Structural Framing
The residence incorporated a complicated framing scope that required experienced execution throughout the hillside structure.
Structural Steel Integration
A complex steel package needed to work together with the surrounding wood framing, making coordination between structural systems an important part of the build.
Crane Operations
Restricted site access required selected materials and wall sections to be craned into position where conventional delivery and handling were difficult.
Hillside Construction
The sloped property added logistical complexity to material movement, staging, and structural execution throughout construction.
Building
Around the Site
For custom residential construction, the site can influence the building strategy as much as the architectural plans.
The North Lake property presented access conditions that required the framing team to think carefully about how materials would move from delivery to installation. Crane operations provided a practical solution for selected structural components while reducing reliance on conventional site access.
By adapting execution to the property itself, S. R. Freeman was able to approach the framing and steel work with the site's limitations already in mind.
Collaboration in
the Tahoe Region
The North Lake Custom Residence continued S. R. Freeman's work with Structerra Inc., an established project relationship within the Truckee/Lake Tahoe region.
Working with a familiar general contractor supported communication as the team navigated the residence's complex structural requirements and difficult site conditions. Relationships built across multiple projects can create a stronger understanding of expectations, coordination, and how teams work together in the field.
Built With the Bigger Picture in Mind
S. R. Freeman approaches custom residential structural framing as part of a larger construction process.
Our philosophy is to think like builders, not just framers. At North Lake, that meant considering how hillside access, material movement, crane operations, structural steel, and wood framing would need to work together before and during field execution.
For demanding mountain homes, seeing those connections helps the team prepare for more than the framing directly in front of them.
