Project Overview

The Martis Camp Custom Residence was a new residential build involving structural framing, exterior siding, window installation, timber elements, and a complex steel package. With framing taking place during the middle of winter, seasonal conditions became an important consideration in determining how the work would be executed.

S. R. Freeman responded by framing wall sections off-site in Reno before transporting them to Martis Camp for crane installation. This approach allowed substantial framing preparation to take place away from the winter jobsite while supporting efficient assembly once the components arrived.

Taking the Framing Off-Site

Winter construction in the Tahoe region can require a different approach to conventional field framing.

For Martis Camp, S. R. Freeman prepared wall sections off-site in Reno, where significant portions of the framing could advance before being transported to the property. Once delivered, the framed sections were lifted into position by crane.

The strategy allowed the team to adapt its execution to seasonal conditions while coordinating the structural components needed for the residence.

A Closer Look at the Build

Off-Site Wall Framing

Wall sections were framed in Reno and transported to the project, reducing the amount of wall assembly required directly on the winter jobsite.

Structural Steel Integration

A complex steel package required careful coordination with the surrounding residential framing as the structural systems came together.

Timber Installation

Spearhead supplied the timber components for the residence, with S. R. Freeman handling their installation as part of the project scope.

Siding & Window Installation

SRF's work extended beyond structural framing to include exterior siding and window installation, requiring coordination with the developing building envelope.

Framing Through Winter Conditions

Working through the middle of a Tahoe winter added logistical and environmental considerations to an already detailed custom residential build.

Rather than relying entirely on conventional on-site framing, the team used off-site preparation to move substantial portions of the work forward before installation. Crane operations then became an important part of efficiently transferring those prepared components into the structure.

The project demonstrates how construction strategy can be adapted when the environment directly affects field execution.

A Relationship Built Through the Work

The Martis Camp Custom Residence marked S. R. Freeman's first project with Structerra Inc. and became an important relationship-building project in the Tahoe region.

The teams found common ground in their commitment to quality work and effective project execution. That first collaboration developed into a lasting working relationship, with S. R. Freeman continuing to work with Structerra on subsequent projects.

For SRF, repeat partnerships like this reflect the trust that develops when teams work well together in the field.

Built With the Bigger Picture in Mind

S. R. Freeman approaches custom residential structural framing as part of the larger construction process.

Our philosophy is to think like builders, not just framers. At Martis Camp, that meant recognizing how winter conditions would affect execution, preparing wall systems off-site, and coordinating framing with structural steel, timber, siding, windows, and crane operations.

By considering those connections early, the team could shape its approach around what the project actually required rather than treating each scope in isolation.
